Is the Dentist’s Chair Safe for You and Your Baby?

What every expecting mom needs to know about dental care during pregnancy

The Short Answer: YES!

Both the American Dental Association (ADA) and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) confirm that preventive, diagnostic, and emergency dental care is safe at any stage of pregnancy.

In fact, ignoring a dental infection or severe gum inflammation poses a far higher risk to your pregnancy than getting it treated. But there’s one trimester that’s the best time for dental work.

Timing Your Visits

1st Trimester:

Safe for cleanings and urgent care. Elective work is usually delayed simply because morning sickness makes lying back uncomfortable!

2nd Trimester:

The BEST time for fillings or routine work. Morning sickness has usually faded, and sitting up is still easy.

3rd Trimester:

Safe for short visits. We’ll prop a pillow under your hip so you’re completely comfortable.

Safe vs. What to Postpone 

Generally Safe: 

• Routine cleanings & scaling
• Cavity fillings & crowns
• Root canals & extractions (to stop pain/infection)
• X-rays (with proper protective shielding)

Postpone Until After Delivery:

• Elective teeth whitening  
• Cosmetic procedures (veneers)

What About X-Rays & Numbing?

Local Anesthesia:

Numbing agents like Lidocaine are safe for both you and baby. Keeping you pain-free keeps the baby stress-free!  

Digital X-Rays:

Radiation exposure is exceptionally low, so radiographs are considered safe for pregnant patients at any stage during pregnancy. 

Conclusion

Delaying necessary treatment for toothaches or infections can cause unnecessary stress and risks, while routine care keeps both you and your growing baby safe and healthy. Keeping up with your appointments protects both your health and the baby’s! Always let your dental team know how many weeks along you are when booking.
